In 2021 there had been work carried out in an area where many of the locals believed there to be the old castle gatehouse.

 

Unusually, for an area of such importance and interest, the authorities failed to sanction a Watching Brief.

I spoke with the on-site workers who allowed me to take pictures of the area

 

Please bear in mine, I am not trained for archaeological work, but I had to ensure we had some kind of record where the authorities had failed.

I did not find any pottery within the excavated areas, or any other finds, like a pathway/road, which I found very strange if this area was the main entrance to the castle.

 

The actual gatehouse, should there have been one located int this area, would have been positioned south within the outer ditch beyond the area of investigation.

This area is concreted over as it is used as a car park. Should the opportunity to examine this area in full should arise, then I would recommend we do so.

The lack of pottery or finds of other nature, such as a road, could lead us to believe the gatehouse had not been located here. But we must keep an open mind.
